What Can (and Can't) Go in a Dump Trailer
The rule of thumb: if it came out of a house, a garage, a yard or a remodel, it can almost certainly go in. What can't go in is the hazardous stuff — and that isn't us being fussy, it's what the landfill will and won't accept.
Here's the honest list, so nothing gets discovered at pickup.
What you can load
- Furniture — couches, sectionals, tables, chairs, dressers, desks, bookshelves, patio furniture.
- Appliances — washers, dryers, ranges, dishwashers, water heaters, refrigerators and AC units (refrigerant is handled under the proper rules).
- Mattresses and bulky items — any size, plus box springs, frames and bases.
- Yard and green waste — branches, brush, trimmings, sod, palm fronds, weeds.
- Construction and remodel debris — drywall, lumber, flooring, tile, cabinets, countertops, doors, windows, fixtures.
- General household — boxes, clothing, toys, tools, bikes, exercise equipment, electronics, scrap metal.
What can't go in
- Hazardous chemicals — solvents, pesticides, pool chemicals, cleaners.
- Wet paint and stains — dried-out latex is sometimes acceptable; wet is not.
- Motor oil, fuel and antifreeze.
- Car and marine batteries.
- Propane tanks and pressurized cylinders.
- Asbestos or anything containing it.
- Medical waste, needles and pharmaceuticals.
- Tires — these carry their own disposal program; ask us first.
Worth asking about first
- Heavy material — concrete, dirt, rock, roofing and tile are fine, but priced by weight since the landfill bills by the ton. Mention it and get a real number.
- Televisions and e-waste — usually fine, handled under California e-waste rules.
- Anything with a bed-bug concern — tell us up front so it's bagged and handled properly rather than carried through the house.
Where the banned items should go instead
- Every city in San Diego County runs household hazardous-waste drop-off events for exactly this list — paint, chemicals, oil, batteries and propane. Check your city's site for the next date. It's free for residents in most cases.
Common questions
Can I put a mattress in the trailer?
Yes. Mattresses and box springs of any size are fine — they're one of the most common things we haul, and they're specifically hard to get rid of any other way.
Can I put a refrigerator in it?
Yes. Units with refrigerant have to be handled and disposed of under specific rules, and that's covered as part of the haul.
What happens if something not allowed ends up in the load?
Tell us before pickup and we'll sort it out. Finding it at the landfill is what causes problems and extra fees, so a heads-up always costs less than a surprise.
How full can I fill it?
Up to the top rail, loaded evenly. Don't heap it above the sides — it has to travel on the freeway safely.
